We were 2-12, in 1977, when we drafted Doug Williams 17th overall in the 1978 draft. He was the only QB drafted in the first round that year.
Matt Cavanaugh, Guy Benjamin, Mark Miller, and Gifford Nielsen were all the other QBs that were drafted after Williams.
Coach John McKay saw raw talent in Williams and went ahead and decided to make him the leader of his team. Williams was in his second year in the NFL and he had already taken the Buccaneers to the NFC Championship game. Not bad for a QB that didn't face top notch national talent every year at college.
He threw for 16,998 yards and had 100 TDs with 93 ints with one Superbowl win.
It's been said by the locals that the Buccaneers had a hex put on them because of the mistreatment of Doug Williams and how we didn't help when he was going thru family crisis.
I'm not saying I believe in superstitions but looking back at our offensive track record and how we have lost QBs, that have succeeded with other teams, I would probably say that we've had some bad luck with maintaining talent.
I have a feeling that all will change Sunday when we show Doug Williams the love and appreciation we have for him as being the best and first QB to lead us out of the losing hole and induct him to the RING OF HONOR at Raymond James Stadium. If it's a sell out then for years to come hopefully our offense will play well.
Even Winston started off the same way Doug Williams did with us. GO BUCS!!!!
